  • Therapeutic Use: Vascular Spasm: Various vascular spasms associated with smooth muscle spasms as in myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, peripheral and pulmonary embolism, peripheral vascular disease, cerebral angiospastic states, and visceral spasms (ureteral, biliary, and GI colic).
Papaverine is a vasodilator that relaxes smooth muscles in your blood vessels to help them dilate (widen) and is used to treat myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, peripheral and pulmonary embolism, peripheral vascular disease in which there is a vasospastic element, cerebral angiospastic states, and visceral spasms (ureteral, biliary, and GI colic).

IM, Slow IV Injection (Over 1-2 minutes)
For Hospital Use Only
IM, IV: 30 to 120 mg; may repeat dose every 3 hours as indicated. For the treatment of cardiac extrasystole, may administer 2 doses 10 minutes apart.
Off-Label: Vasospasm, harvesting mammary arteries for coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Peri-arterial: 10 mg (1 mg/mL in NS) injected throughout and parallel to the vessel after it has been harvested; avoid vascular wall infiltration.

Cardiovascular: Cardiac arrhythmia (with rapid IV use), flushing, hypertension (mild), tachycardia.<br>

Central Nervous System: Headache, malaise, sedation, vertigo.<br>

Dermatologic: Diaphoresis, skin rash.<br>

Gastrointestinal: Abdominal distress, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, nausea.<br>

Hepatic: Hepatic cirrhosis.<br>

Hypersensitivity: Hypersensitivity reaction (hepatic).<br>

Respiratory: Apnea (with rapid IV use).<br>

<1% Postmarketing and/or Case Reports: Hepatitis.

QT-prolonging Agents (Highest Risk): May enhance the QTc-prolonging effect. Avoid combination.
Pimozide: May enhance the QTc-prolonging effect. Avoid combination.
QT-prolonging Strong CYP3A4 Inhibitors (Moderate Risk): May enhance the QTc-prolonging effect. Avoid combination.
Sertindole: May enhance the QTc-prolonging effect. Avoid combination.
Store below 30°C.
Protect from light and freezing.
